BIOCOATing

Description of project

The main objective of this project is to obtain a new variety of bioactive and antibacterial coatings, based on HAP-SiC and HAP-TiO2, with high microhardness, good adhesion to substrate, low internal stress, resistance against wear and corrosion, low friction coefficient and wear rate, high biocompatibility and antibacterial activity. The coatings are to be specially designed to be used as protective coatings on orthopaedic and dental implants in order to accelerate osseointegration and improve bone bonding ability.

We estimate that all types of the proposed coatings would promote the bone bonding and biomechanical fixation by accelerating the osteointegration process, so increasing the service lifetime of the dental or orthopedic implants. Thus the “classical” HAP will be progressively replaced by the novel bioactive and antibacterial coatings.
